Conservation of Biodiversity

Policies and Strategies

For mushroom cultivation, culture media made from plant-derived materials, such as sawdust made by grinding wood and other materials, is used. As a company not only benefitting from the blessings of nature but also fostering nature, Yukiguni Maitake believes that loss of biodiversity can pose a business risk, especially in terms of raw material procurement. Therefore, we have identified “procurement of raw materials and use of water resources in a sustainable way” as our materiality, and we are conducting monitoring through management of suppliers and on-site checks to ensure that the procurement of sawdust that does not lead to deforestation. In addition, we strive to conserve forest resources and water resources through the “Yukiguni Maitake Forest Creation Activities” and other activities.

Moreover, we are promoting activities that lead to the conservation of biodiversity, from multiple perspectives, such as measures to reduce sawdust consumption itself by increasing the reuse ratio of the culture medium, the conversion to renewable energy and use of waste culture media as fuel to reduce the use of fossil fuels, and the reduction of the amount of packaging materials used.
